States Of Matter

Author: Oliver Hyman

AreaPhysical Sciences

 Grade Level: 8-9

  Overview:

This lesson gives an introduction to the different states of matter and how to identify elements and compounds based on their melting points, boiling points, and solubility. It includes a powerpoint that explains solids, liquids, gases, melting point, boiling point, vaporization, thermal energy, solubility. Along with the lecture there is a worksheet in which students have to use their newly acquired knowledge and graphing skills to solve a murder mystery.

Standards:

SCIENCE STANDARDS:Strand 5: Physical scienceConcept 1:Properties and changes of properties in matter                        PO 1: Students will learn about states of matter, boiling pt, melting pt, and solubility.

PO 7: Students learn how thermal energy can affect the physical properties of matter.

Students will also gain problem solving skills, graphing skills, and the ability to apply their knowledge to a “real life” situation.

Keywords: solids, liquids, gases, melting point, boiling point, vaporization, thermal energy, solubility.
